Substance Abuse

Know the Signs and Your Treatment Options

Signs of Alcohol Abuse

To tell whether you, or someone you know, has a problem with alcohol abuse, check for these signs:

  • Blackouts or temporary memory loss
  • Regular arguments or fights with family members or friends
  • Irritability, depression, or mood swings
  • Continually drinking alcohol to relax, to cheer up, to sleep, to deal with problems, or to feel “normal”
  • Unpleasant symptoms when one stops drinking: headache, anxiety, insomnia, or nausea
  • Drinking alone, in the mornings, or in secret
  • Physical symptoms, including flushed skin or broken capillaries on the face, a husky voice, trembling or shaking, bloody or black stools, vomiting blood, or chronic diarrhea

Signs of Addiction

Signs of addiction in general may include:

  • Loss of control over behavior: engaging in a behavior more than intended, for longer than intended, or despite determining not to
  • Neglecting family, friends, and other interests
  • Decreased attendance or performance at work or school
  • Risk taking
  • Relationship and anger issues
  • Secrecy, including unexplained injuries or accidents
  • Changing appearance: especially a serious decrease in cleanliness or hygiene
  • Family history of addiction
  • Tolerance: getting less of a reaction from the same amount of a substance or behavior
  • Withdrawal: physical symptoms experienced when substances wear off
  • Continued use despite negative consequences

Treatment and Treatment Options

There are many different approaches to treating substance abuse, but most include three basic phases. First, detoxification, in order to rid the body of chemicals and toxins so the addicted person can begin to learn to function without them. Then counseling, in order to deal with the underlying mental and emotional causes of abuse, as well as the difficulties experienced in dealing with sobriety. And finally aftercare, to provide support and guidance, and reduce the risk of relapse.

The best treatment for you will vary depending on the specifics of your addiction and your situation in life. Some of the more common types of treatment programs are:

  • Residential treatment centers. Patients get a break from the stresses and temptations of their lives and can focus on their recovery.
  • Outpatient treatment centers. Patients get support and treatment while at the center, but are able to return to the structure and comforts of their home environment between visits.
  • Dual-diagnosis centers. Patients with mental health problems as well as addiction can get the best possible treatment for both at a dual-diagnosis center.
  • Teen drug abuse treatment centers. Adolescents have very specific needs that can complicate treatment. These centers address the specific needs of younger patients.
  • Women’s drug abuse treatment centers. These centers address many of the complications that may accompany substance abuse in women, such as domestic violence and history of abuse.
