Free Meal Options for Children this Summer
Are you in need of free meal resources for your family this summer? Local Hancock County residents with children 18 and under have several options to pick up free breakfast and lunch from our area school corporations. Learn more about how our community is coming together to battles food insecurity, especially in light of the hardships the COVID-19 pandemic has placed on many local families.
Greenfield-Central School Corporation
Thanks to a federal grant provided by the Summer Food Service Program, Greenfield-Central Schools is offering free meals to children aged 18 and under through July 23 (aside from the July 5 holiday). At the following locations, lunch is served every weekday from 11:15-11:45 a.m., and breakfast for the next day is provided as well.
- Riley Pool concession stand, 300 Apple St.
- Greenfield Intermediate School, 204 W. Park Ave, Door No. 12 on north side of building
- J.B. Stephens Elementary School, 1331 North Blue Rd, westside in the bus parking lot
- Greenfield-Central Junior High School, 1440 North Franklin St, westside in the bus parking lot
- Prairie Meadows apartments, 2915 Sweet Grass Ln, in front of building No. 2
And at Greenfield-Central High School (810 N. Broadway St, Door No. 14 on the west side of the building) breakfast is served every weekday from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m., and lunch is served from noon to 12:30 p.m.
Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation
Every Monday, Mt. Vernon school is offering five free breakfasts and lunches to children aged 18 and under. Food pick-up takes place on Mondays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Fortville Elementary School, Door No. 13. Note that pick-up will not take place during the holiday week of July 5. More details and any program changes can be found on the school’s social media.
Community School Corporation of Southern Hancock County
The Community School Corporation of Southern Hancock County is offering free meal packs to children under the age of 18 daily from July 5-23. You can visit the drive-thru pick-up line at New Palestine Intermediate School from 12:30-1 p.m., and your child does not have to be a Southern Hancock student to participate. However, the corporation has requested that families intending to pick up meals complete their Google Form in order to prepare an appropriate amount of food each day.
Free Meal Options Extended Through 2021-2022
In addition to the free lunch programs provided this summer, all Hancock County school corporations and schools across the country will continue to provide every enrolled student with the option of free breakfast & lunch meals through the 2021-22 school year. First launched mid-2020 in response to the hardships of the COVID-19 pandemic, the USDA has approved the extension of their nationwide Child Nutrition waiver through June 2022 as a part of their commitment to “provide safe, healthy meals free of charge to children as the pandemic continues to threaten the food and nutrition security of our most vulnerable.”
